2018 “Whale Song” Sparkling Wine
Ferris Wheel Estate Vineyard, Elkton Oregon
This is a method champenoise blanc de noir brut nature made with pinot noir from our own estate vineyard. Our site is in the Coast Range at 1000’ elevation and only 25 miles from the coast, very cool indeed. We thought it natural to name this wine Whale Song, celebrating our theme of Orcas, also our business name. Only upon researching Orca did we learn that from the Latin it means shaped like a barrel or cask! The wine has a lovely pale straw color and the mousse is tiny bubbles that continue to well up from the bottom of the glass. The yeasty aromas also show some surprising red fruits, bright cherry to go along with a creamy, peachy, floral garden of gardenias and honeysuckle. The attack is awakening, crisp and effervescent with tangy acidity. The flavors mirror the aromas with a good dose of citrus, lemon chiffon and lime zest. The finish is long, dry, tart and very appealing. Oysters anyone, or sushi!
We are very pleased to share this wine with you, our first effort at method champenoise, and as our back label says, no excuses needed to pop a cork, let it spout and sing to you!
