Our 2018 riesling comes from two vineyards in Elkton planted in 1983, adjacent to one another, Bradley and Anindor. Both had used cuttings from the original Ken Thomason Elkton planting dating to 1972. These west facing slopes have windblown soils originating in the Cascades, Coast Range and Siskiyous, carried to Elkton by the Umpqua River. Their sites have proven to be excellent for this late ripening variety and our cool maritime climate here in Elkton allows for full flavors and aromatics to develop. This wine opens with aromas of ripe pears and green apple with hints of tangerine, lime and sweet honeysuckle. The entry is crisp and racy and as the wine warms in your mouth all of these fruit flavors emerge and the texture becomes more supple. The finish is very pleasing and lingering. Riesling is such a versatile wine to pair with so many different cuisines. Right now I can see this matching well with sushi, spiced duck breast, cheese souffles, brats, simple sautéed fish preparations, soft cheeses and fruit or a BLT. BBQ sauce.
