This is one of our most unique and complex varietals. While traditionally used as a Bordeaux blending grape, it is not well-known as a single varietal outside of its new-world home in Chile. Carménère was thought to have gone nearly extinct during the European phylloxera epidemic of the late 1800s. In 1994, it was discovered that what was thought to be Merlot planted widely across Chile was, in fact, Carménère. Those vines transplanted by European immigrants have found their way back to their Bordeaux roots, as well as homes across South and North America Aromas of bell pepper, red fruits, and earth, explode on the nose. On the palate, more bell pepper flavors are layered with subtle flavors of raspberry, sour cherry, and bittersweet chocolate followed by a hint of stony minerals. This wine has minimal tannins, a pleasant acidity, and a medium body. It is easy to drink alone or paired with roasted chicken or beef, Mexican cuisine, and anything spiced with cumin.
