Join us online for our new Explorers Virtual Tasting series! We are launching this series with a tasting of Tannats from around the Americas- we will taste our own Narmada Tannat alongside two lovely ones from Uruguay! We will be joined by Fletcher Henderson, who brings a depth of experience in the world of wine, from distribution, importing, conducting education classes, and tastings to vineyard and winemaking experience. He has worked and volunteered at many Virginia wineries since the mid-1990’s, and is currently the Vice President of the Board of Directors for the Atlantic Seaboard Wine Association. Fletcher spent several years as the winemaker for LaGrange, and for Quattro Goombas, and has worked in wine imports and distribution since. The Virtual Tasting will be live-streamed on Facebook at 6 PM on Friday, January 29th, 2021. Each tasting pack includes 1 full bottle(750 mL) of each wine. We will be tasting: Familia Traversa Tannat, 2018 (Uruguay) Artesana Tannat, 2018 (Canelones, Uruguay) Narmada Tannat, 2017 (Rappahannock, Virginia) Order by Sunday, January 24th, to leave plenty of time for the wine to be shipped to you. Curbside pickup is also available! TASTING NOTES: Artesana Tannat, 2018: Artesana is a small production, single vineyard estate winery in the Canelones region of Uruguay. Made with the highest quality estate grown fruit, Artesana’s handcrafed wines showcase Uruguay’s distinctive terroir and its signature varietal Tannat. Artesana wines are made with minimal intervention, allowing the character of the fruit to be expressed. Gentle handling techniques are practiced throughout the process. Lots from the various Tannat blocks were fermented separately in small stainless steel tanks. 20- day cool maceration regimes provided excellent aroma and favor extraction. Barrel aging was done in new and one to four year old French and American oak for 12 months to carefully accentuate the favors of the wine. Custom blended and botled without fning or fltration. Full bodied and redolent with rich cassis and blackberry fruit sufused with layers of licorice, clove, cedar and allspice harmonizing in a long and well rounded fnish. Pairs beautifully with pasta and meat dishes including beef, lamb and pork. Familia Traversa Tannat, 2018: With over 240 hectares of vineyards, Familia Traversa is not a small operation, but it operates like one. Founded in 1956, the 4th generation of the Traversa family, who came over from Veneto Italy, is intimately involved in every aspect of vineyard management and winemaking. This wine is a blend of 90% of Tannat and 10% Merlot to round off the edges. Fermented in stainless steel, aged for 2 months in American oak and then in bottles for about a year before release. A deep ruby red color with complex nose of smoke and leather leads into flavors of stone fruits such as plum, apricot, cherries with hints of spice. A dry, full-bodied wine with a strong and balanced palate. Soft tannins and an elegant structured finish.
