Carménère, a new wine for us, is a wonderful, somewhat forgotten old Bordeaux red grape that survived the 1800’s European Phylloxera plague by its inadvertent importation to Chile where it was mistaken for Merlot. Still grown almost exclusively in Chile today, this delicious, under-the-radar grape is beginning to make its way to vineyards in Europe again as well as the U.S. Carménère is showing great promise in our local Lake Erie AVA vineyards and produces a robust and distinctive wine with smooth tannins and rich with smoky, blackberry, tobacco leaf, dark chocolate and white pepper notes. Superb with red meats, especially those from the grill. Nothing better with a grilled lamb chop or picanha.
