2021 Merlot Grand Vintage

The 2014 Merlot Grand Vintage was aged for 17 months in neutral French oak. This seems like a rather different wine than the regular Merlot (the white label) reviewed, although many will be happy stopping there, as that is very fine this year. This has a bit more depth and a sterner feel, tighter on the finish, while the regular bottling emphasizes its freshness and sunny demeanor a bit more. The fruit flavor is easier to find here, less cut by acidity, although that is certainly relative. They both have a fresh, somewhat lean feel overall--cool-climate Merlots. This bottling has more upside potential, however, more chance of becoming something interesting in the cellar. I suspect this will separate more from the white label bottling in a few years, either by this going up or that going down, or some combination of both. Right now, they are merely different sides of the same coin. This will be released at the beginning of 2018, at which point it may be a bit better developed. - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate - 91 points

2022 minimalist chenin blanc

A special, select hand harvest of only the most pristine clusters from our oldest Chenin Blanc vineyard, planted in 1982, was performed to obtain the grapes used to make this wine. The fruit was pressed whole cluster. The juice was transferred to stainless steel barrels in which alcoholic fermentation spontaneously occurred. Other than a minimal amount of sulfites, nothing was added to the wine. It remained in steel barrels for 7 months prior to bottling. It is sealed with a screw cap to preserve freshness and cleanliness.

This Riesling is a botrytis-affected wine, made from grapes with 'Noble Rot'. It offers clean, bright aromas of peaches, apples, nectarines, flowers and honey. It has rich, honeyed texture with sweet and delicious flavors of apple, peach, apricot and grape. This wine has terrific acid balance, a persistent aftertaste and a crisp, nearly dry finish. Enjoy on it's own after a meal or try pairing it with fruit tarts and cheeses. Only 439 cases were made. Alcohol: 9.0% Residual Sugar: 16% Brix at Harvest: 33.5 The 2012 Riesling Late Harvest comes in at 154 grams per liter of residual sugar and 9% alcohol. Now that you are in the land of late-harvest Riesling, this is where you'll start saying "Apricots, Peaches and Pineapple, oh my!" As rich as it sometimes seems, what actually makes this interesting rather than scary is the zest and acidity. It is most certainly sweet, but it doesn't seem anywhere near as sweet as statistics might suggest. It adds a bit of bite and tension as it airs on the lingering and completely delicious finish. That drier and fresher character was underscored emphatically the next day, when the sugar was just a bit more subdued, the flavors intense and the demeanor bright and sunny. This should satisfy lots of desires over the next few years (or, noting that these tend to age well, the next couple of decades or so.) We'll be conservative at the moment. The Sauvignon Blanc grapes from our original planting (planted in 1984) behind the winery were allowed to hang on the vine beyond their normal point of full ripeness to promote the development of botrytis, the 'Noble Rot'. A slow, cool fermentation in new French oak barrels yielded intense and focused tropical fruit flavors like litchi, quince, pineapple, mango and guava. This wine is rich and sweet, and has ample acidity to balance the sugar, resulting in a sensational, full-bodied, dessert wine with a long finish. The oak embellishes the wine by imparting a subtle nutty flavor and by increasing complexity. A wonderful match with sharp cheeses like Roquefort or Stilton, or enjoy on its own after dinner. ““Best Red Wine” - 2021 New York Wine Classic “Best Red Blend” - 2021 New York Wine Classic Our Assemblage is only crafted during exceptional vintages. The 2015 Assemblage is dense and round, with intense aromas of cassis, black berry, cedar and spice. Medium to full-bodied, a firm tannin structure and a long finish. “The 2015 Assemblage is a blend of 71% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot (about as low as my records indicate), 13% Cabernet Franc and the rest Petit Verdot, all aged for 28 months in 16% new French oak, the rest neutral. It comes in at 13.5% alcohol. This is a Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated wine this year, with little Merlot impact, largely due to a virus attacking some of the Merlot vines that normally would go into the Assemblage, said Kareem Massoud. Although Long Island is particularly famed for Merlot, Paumanok is one of the region's better Cabernet Sauvignon producers. I'm not sure I'd say this is an improvement over the normal blend, but it's still a very good wine. It seemed a bit compact on opening, but then it sang prettier songs with air (including re-tasting it the next day). It's bright, fresh, balanced and focused. It's a little tight just now, but that just means it needs a little more cellaring or aeration. The next day, it was much better, more expressive and able to flesh out a bit in the glass. I still think it is worth leaning up on this, but it does have some things to prove in the cellar.
