Waft The Fruit Syrah. Every once in a while we come across a barrel of wine that gives us a moment of pause, WTF. To capture the breadth, depth and balance of this wine, we chose to bottle this single barrel of Syrah separately. Welcome to our world. This is something other. In winemaking, you can research and postulate all you want, but until you actually put 60 gallons of wine into a $1,200 barrel and wait a couple of years, you don’t really know. Machiavellian red. A swirl of the stem unleashes an intense torrent of five spice, cured meat, bridle leather, garrigue, incense and rich dark cacao. Initially seeming quite pleasant on the palate, the show is only just beginning. a damn fine tongue lashing awaits! Layer upon layer of deeply structured Syrah begins to permeate, hedonistically triggering increased serotonin production. Quick breaths of air across the palate provide accelerant for the inevitable crescendo that surely awaits. The stem tannins now assert themselves, teasing and accentuating the moments leading up to the inevitable foregone conclusion. After the proper refractory period, a second sip is left to the readers discretion. What a tease! Well, now we know. This particular cooper’s barrel was not ready to show us its magic after 2 years, or 3 years. Ernie became concerned at the 4 year mark, as that is the typical barrel maturation period of the most celebrated single vineyard Côte Rôtie Syrah wines. But he wouldn’t let it go. And by spring 2023 we could finally Waft The Fruit! (Single barrel production, 24 cases produced)

Wadenswil Clone is a 2 barrel selection of our most intriguing Estate grown Wadenswil clone Pinot Noir. The pioneers who began planting Pinot Noir in the North Willamette Valley began primarily with 2 clones of Pinot Noir – Pommard (French, of course) and Wadenswil (Swiss.) As the vines matured, high quality wines from both clones were grown in the valley, but the Pommard clone was gaining wide spread acclaim and notoriety. It seems that the Wadenswil clone was not well suited to the land it was being planted to. Most of the early plantings were done on basalt based soils such as Jory. However success leaves clues, and we did discover something others may have missed. When planning our vineyard, we were particularly intrigued with the Wadenswil clone wines we had experienced from sedimentary soil vineyards. The fragrant, intense, laser focused fruit aromas were relentless. It is no accident, but a strategic choice that we have several of our sedimentary soil vineyard blocks planted to the Wadenswil clone. Further to the point, it seems that every year one of these Wadenswil blocks is a cellar favorite and a component of “The Reserve.” It may seem that we go to a good deal of trouble to explain an inconsequential event, but it is not so. Wadenswil clone Pinot Noir grown on our sedimentary soils is, for us, what Pinot Noir is all about. The full range of Pinot Noir aromas and flavors along with a dizzying array of mid-palate textures and reverberating acidity define the Wadenswil clone. As the wine maturates in barrel, we are continually “thieving” and evaluating each barrel. While written records are very important, especially as we age, our mental and physical impression of each wine drives us. As each sample is tasted and re-tasted, we begin to better understand what each blend represents and the promise it holds for future development. While The Reserve is a blend of our very favorite barrels from the vintage, the Wadenswil clone blend represents our best expression of this pioneering clone. As is the case with all of our Pinot Noirs, this bottling is 100% Estate grown and hand harvested fruit. The individual blocks were fermented with whole clusters and indigenous yeast from the vineyard. In the cellar, we aged the individual lots in French oak barrels for a minimum of 12 months. The blend is a reflection of our soils, microclimates and stewardship of the land.

The fruit was fermented in small lots and then matured in French oak barrels from a selection of coopers. The Dijon Clones Pinot Noir is a blend of 7 Dijon clones sourced from 12 dry farmed blocks. The barrels of wine crafted from each block are culminations of the soil, rootstock, clonal selections and our unique microclimates. Much like an individual instrument in a symphony, each barrel contributes its own unique character to the final composition. The individual clonal attributes are presented in the aroma and bouquet. The flavors and textures combine on the palate to provide depth and rich layers of Pinot Noir fruit that are distinctly Oregon. As is the case with all of our Pinot Noirs, this bottling is 100% estate grown and hand harvested fruit. As with all of our blocks of Pinot Noir, these vines are individually hand harvested at their peak of flavor maturity and intensity. The fruit was fermented in small lots and then matured in French oak barrels from a selection of coopers. The Dijon Clones Pinot Noir is a blend of 7 Dijon clones sourced from 12 dry farmed blocks. The barrels of wine crafted from each block are culminations of the soil, rootstock, clonal selections and our unique microclimates. Much like an individual instrument in a symphony, each barrel contributes its own unique character to the final composition. The individual clonal attributes are presented in the aroma and bouquet. Wadenswil Clone is a 2 barrel selection of our most intriguing Estate grown Wadenswil clone Pinot Noir. The pioneers who began planting Pinot Noir in the North Willamette Valley began primarily with 2 clones of Pinot Noir – Pommard (French, of course) and Wadenswil (Swiss.) As the vines matured, high quality wines from both clones were grown in the valley, but the Pommard clone was gaining wide spread acclaim and notoriety. It seems that the Wadenswil clone was not well suited to the land it was being planted to. Most of the early plantings were done on basalt based soils such as Jory. However success leaves clues, and we did discover something others may have missed. When planning our vineyard, we were particularly intrigued with the Wadenswil clone wines we had experienced from sedimentary soil vineyards. The fragrant, intense, laser focused fruit aromas were relentless. It is no accident, but a strategic choice that we have several of our sedimentary soil vineyard blocks planted to the Wadenswil clone. Further to the point, it seems that every year one of these Wadenswil blocks is a cellar favorite and a component of “The Reserve.” It may seem that we go to a good deal of trouble to explain an inconsequential event, but it is not so. Wadenswil clone Pinot Noir grown on our sedimentary soils is, for us, what Pinot Noir is all about. The full range of Pinot Noir aromas and flavors along with a dizzying array of mid-palate textures and reverberating acidity define the Wadenswil clone. As the wine maturates in barrel, we are continually “thieving” and evaluating each barrel. Wadenswil Clone is a 2 barrel selection of our most intriguing Estate grown Wadenswil clone Pinot Noir. The pioneers who began planting Pinot Noir in the North Willamette Valley began primarily with 2 clones of Pinot Noir – Pommard (French, of course) and Wadenswil (Swiss.) As the vines matured, high quality wines from both clones were grown in the valley, but the Pommard clone was gaining wide spread acclaim and notoriety. It seems that the Wadenswil clone was not well suited to the land it was being planted to. Most of the early plantings were done on basalt based soils such as Jory. However success leaves clues, and we did discover something others may have missed. When planning our vineyard, we were particularly intrigued with the Wadenswil clone wines we had experienced from sedimentary soil vineyards. The fragrant, intense, laser focused fruit aromas were relentless. It is no accident, but a strategic choice that we have several of our sedimentary soil vineyard blocks planted to the Wadenswil clone. Further to the point, it seems that every year one of these Wadenswil blocks is a cellar favorite and a component of “The Reserve.” It may seem that we go to a good deal of trouble to explain an inconsequential event, but it is not so. Wadenswil clone Pinot Noir grown on our sedimentary soils is, for us, what Pinot Noir is all about. The full range of Pinot Noir aromas and flavors along with a dizzying array of mid-palate textures and reverberating acidity define the Wadenswil clone. As the wine maturates in barrel, we are continually “thieving” and evaluating each barrel. While written records are very important, especially as we age, our mental and physical impression of each wine drives us. The barrels of wine crafted from each block are culminations of the soil, rootstock, clonal selections and our unique microclimates. Much like an individual instrument in a symphony, each barrel contributes its own unique character to the final composition. The individual clonal attributes are presented in the aroma and bouquet. The flavors and textures combine on the palate to provide depth and rich layers of Pinot Noir fruit that are distinctly Oregon. Heirloom Cameo is our barrel fermented Chardonnay. Or as Dena would explain it: “This wine wraps you in an elegant silk scarf and instantly makes you feel really good - about being you.” The wine was fermented in a single large format French oak barrel or “puncheon.” The goal of this fermentation is to enhance the breadth and depth of the wine through contact with oak and extended yeast or “lees” aging. Stylistically, this wine is made to be enjoyed throughout its time in bottle. Upon release the wine is fresh with pungent aromas and a broad mouth feel, followed by a crisp and satisfying finish. We expect this wine to age gracefully for several years and will reward a laddered approach to monitoring its development. The Chardonnay for this wine is estate grown in 1 small block. The blend is about half Dijon clone 76 and half Dijon clone 95. This block was hand harvested and thanks to a cold cellar, completes primary fermentation the following spring.

We have been waiting quite some time to share this with you. Our Mistletoe Ridge ™ Pinot Noir bottling was intended to celebrate the establishment of a sub-Willamette Valley AVA. However, the sub-Willamette Valley AVA in question has yet to be formally announced. The vintage is 2016. This is the same year the sub-Willamette Valley AVA petition was submitted. It has been a long 5+ years, and still we wait. But time and tide wait for no man. Our 2016 Mistletoe Ridge ™ Pinot Noir is a 4 barrel selection from a very small area of the vineyard, less than 2 acres. The soil there is part of the Bellpine series, however it is very shallow and contains fractured ironstone. While fractured ironstone is not a root restrictive layer, it also does not hold very much soil moisture. Stones are just that way… Perhaps a sub-sub-AVA exists right here in a yet to be announced sub-Willamette Valley AVA? Too soon to tell, but the proof is in the soil and now the bottle. Part of the discipline in laying out our vineyard was to isolate unique soil characteristics. We excavated several deep soil pits throughout our site and also took multiple soil core samples going down about 6 feet. This provided us with the intelligence we needed to match our rootstocks to our soil profile. It will come as no surprise to longtime readers of the FLOG, that this unique soil formation, elevation and aspect is planted to 5C rootstock, with the Pommard clone grafted on top. While we freely admit that it is better to be lucky than good, we also recognize that success favors the prepared mind. The pioneers who began planting Pinot Noir in the North Willamette Valley began primarily with 2 clones of Pinot Noir – Pommard (French, of course) and Wadenswil (Swiss.) As the vines matured, high quality wines from both clones were grown in the valley, but the Pommard clone was gaining widespread acclaim and notoriety. There is a very good reason the Pommard clone was catching on. The Pommard clone represents all that is inherently beautiful in Pinot Noir. It is grown on all types of soils and is unique in its ability to reflect vineyard specific splendor, nuances and vintage conditions. While the eyes are the window into the soul, the Pommard clone expresses the inherent beauty of our vineyard through the lens of the vintage. As the wine maturates in barrel, we are continually “thieving” and evaluating each barrel. While written records are very important, especially as we age, our mental and physical impression of each wine drives us. As each sample is tasted and re-tasted, we begin to better understand what each blend represents and the promise it holds for future development. The Reserve is an exclusive selection of Pinot Noir representing our most intriguing wine in the cellar. The final blend represents countless hours of tasting wine from barrel. Only with such in-depth knowledge of our subject, were we able to select these 2 barrels of Pinot Noir. Every block of Pinot Noir within our 35 acre vineyard is individually hand harvested at its peak of flavor maturity and intensity. Block by block, the fruit is fermented in small 1.5 ton lots and matured for over 18 months in French oak barrels. Every vineyard block and clone/rootstock combination showcases something unique and special from the vineyard. After fermentation is complete, the wine is placed into a selection of barrels to mature. We source French oak barrels from several coopers. The wine takes a different path to maturity in each barrel, developing its own nuances. We taste all of our barrels of wine many times throughout the year. We experience the evolution of flavors and aromas and remember the significant events in our vineyard. The excitement of an early bloom, the mystery of a very light fruit set, the discovery of color change at veraison, and the rapture of harvest. Tasting each barrel of wine provides us a snapshot in time. We experience the wine’s development. As we taste wine through the cellar, we can usually agree on when we have found the best barrel or two of Pinot Noir. When that happens, we find that we disagree on whose blend it is going into. And when we find that we agree to disagree, we have just found The Reserve.

Stylistically, this wine is made to be enjoyed throughout its time in bottle. Upon release the wine is fresh with pungent aromas and a broad mouth feel, followed by a crisp and satisfying finish. We expect this wine to age gracefully for several years and will reward a laddered approach to monitoring its development. The Chardonnay for this wine is estate grown in 1 small block. We are very proud to introduce to you our estate grown 2019 Dijon Clones Chardonnay! Kinda rocks your world, we know. Here is what didn’t change. Ernie still grows this wine in block 24. The block still has 1,089 vines of Dijon Clone Chardonnay, with the field blend favoring clone 76 over 95. The rootstock is still that mother of all rootstocks, 5C. And yes, we still produce the BFC Heirloom Cameo. Starting to feel the hairs on the back of your neck relax, maybe just a bit? So, what’s new about the 2019 Dijon Clones Chardonnay? We have retired the Her Silhouette fanciful name in favor of a more informative name. The Dijon Clones of Chardonnay are the new vines on the block. The vines were brought into Oregon direct from Burgundy just about the time we were establishing the vineyard at Amalie Robert Estate. And they make a damn fine wine. It also eliminates any confusion that we are growing that much maligned 108 clone out of California. The primary fermentation of sugar to alcohol is still done without oak influence. Stylistically, the Her Silhouette was colloquially known as “No Oak, No Malo”. We have moved on. And you can too! All it takes is a little bacterium and all of that malic acid becomes lactic acid. If that sounds yummy, it’s because it is. Lactic acid is the acid in goat's milk, and you get yummy goat cheese from goat's milk. Malic acid is from your granny’s “screamin’ greenies” green apples that she grew out on Boone’s Farm road. Remember her? That was before cellphones, and cellphone cameras, fortunately. The Malo to Lactic (ML) conversion happens virtually all the time in red wines. In white wines winemakers typically have a choice to encourage or discourage this conversion. Mistakes (known as uncontrolled experiments or, sometimes, successful failures) happen all the time in winemaking. In some circumstances, you will have the ML conversion whether you want it or not. The opposite is also true. You can wish in one hand and wait in the other, but it’s just not going to happen. Maybe next year, but that’s a long time to wait. We made the stylistic (and intentional) choice to change our ML program in 2019. Over the last 20 years or so, we have noticed our site affords a bit of a Sancerre expression in our Chardonnay that provides some intrigue. Ernie wanted to try and expand on that, while better integrating and softening the screamin' greenie experience. That, and Dena said we are not planting any Sauvignon Blanc. So as part of our unquenchable thirst for knowledge and unabated appetite for risk, Ernie said, “What the Hell, let’s give it a try!” And that is how we arrived at the 2019 Dijon Clones Chardonnay - "No Oak, Full Malo".

2021 G'wzr Gewurztraminer

G’wzr (codename Thunder-Monkey) is what you do when you can’t find a Gewurztraminer that you like. You just grow your own. That’s legal, now, in Oregon. And, as it turns out, that is a good thing. Gewurztraminer is one of the most aromatic of the aromatic white wine varieties that also include Riesling and Viognier. The unadulterated aromas of Gewurztraminer are unrivaled and we simply could deny ourselves no longer. It was the Spring of 2013 when Ernie planted 25 vines that would bare our fruit. One fell prey to a gopher. Undeterred, he pressed on – without said gopher. This wine was made in the most minimalist way possible. We hand harvested the clusters, which is harder than any other variety due to the exceeding short stem. The clusters were then eased into our press and gently encouraged to “Give it up!” And they did. The juice was settled overnight and then gently flowed into an inert fermentation vessel where a fortnight of flocculation began forthwith. Not every winery does it, but if you start wandering around the Willamette valley during harvest time you may get the opportunity to discover a winemaker’s experiment. Something fermenting that is not quite ready for prime time, but is showing great promise. In our case, the little fermentation vessel under the lab table made lab work an aromatic pleasure!
