The 2014 Franny Beck Willamette Valley Pinot Noir is an impeccably lithe yet nuanced wine, given the warm, dry vintage. The fruit was harvested between 10/4 and 10/10 when physiological ripeness had occurred. All fermentations were conducted in 1.5 ton fermenters to ensure small lot individuality and clonal distinctiveness. Punch downs were performed twice daily by foot, the most gentle way to extract flavor slowly from the fruit. Average fermentation lasted 14 days followed by slow, easy pressing. The wines were then barreled into 100% French oak, 15% of which were new, and aged for 10 months. Blending trials were performed after the completion of native malolactic fermentation. The resulting wine is a beautiful combination of clone and site, speaking to all the best that the valley and the vintage gave us. Red fruits dominate the front palate, especially red spring raspberry and cranberry. There is a spicy, blood orange quality to the midpalate with a light-hearted body, begging for food pairing. The finish provides a kiss of oak, just enough to remind you that this is a serious blend that will show its best with a few years of age.
