As with several of our wines, the proprietary name does in fact describe what is in the bottle: Ampio means ample or generous in Italian. Using two grapes which are both dark in color and complex in flavor, the blend satisfies the palate's need for a "big" wine without overemphasis on either fruit or alcohol; it has a unique roundness to it that is captivating in a heavier style of red. For Ampio, we use the French red grape Mondeuse indigenous to the Savoie region on the border with Swizerland and Carmine, a two-generation cross of ( ( Carignan X Cabernet Sauvignon) X Merlot ) developed by the famous breeder Dr. H.P. Olmo at the University of California.

Sangineto is an archaic name for Sangiovese; inasmuch as this wine could be a varietal Sangiovese most years ( i.e. greater than 75%), the moniker is appropriate. We have evolved a blend formula of using 10 % Merlot plus 10% Montepulciano to give added body and deeper color, similar to what is done in many so-called Super-Tuscan style wines. Sangineto will not bowl you over, yet you will be impressed by its restrained elegance, reminding one of the Chiantis from the Rufina area.

Our flagship Cristallo blend for 2018 features a widely grown, but almost unknown grape of Georgian origin as its main varietal. The Rkatsiteli grape is grown on over 300,000 acres in several Eastern European countries and is of extremely high quality. It has a unique varietal flavor which reminds some tasters of Gewurztraminer or Riesling or a blend of the two. We add some Pinot Blanc, Pinot Grigio and Melon de Bourgogne to complement the Rkatsiteli and produce a dry wine of the kind available only from Avanguardia.

2018 Cara Mia Rosato

Until 2010, Avanguardia did not produce a rose type wine. Loss of our estate vineyard crop to frost and the necessity of dealing with some under-ripe red varieties led us to make one and taught us that this wine type, especially when made to imitate Provence, is most worthwhile. This non-vintage version uses wines from both 2015 and 2016 including several of four red grapes in the making, Monduese Noir, Sangiovese, and Dolcetto. Customers who typically avoid rose are instant converts. Slightly off-dry at most, and wonderfully fruity and complex, you will love this wine.

2015 Premiato

This is our blend of Barbera and Dolcetto; the lean and fruity Barbera melds nicely with the rounder and more luscious Dolcetto to create a combination which is found nowhere else, not even in the homeland of these varieties, the Italian Piedmont region. Premiato is based on a long history of blending Barbera with other varieties, especially in our experimental foothill vineyard, founded in 1977 in Tulare County. The name means "prize-winner" and this wine has won multiple Golds, including one at the inaugural competition sponsored by Sunset Magazine.

2019 Due Fiori

Two of the varieties used in this wine contain a variant of the word ";flower"; right in the name: Flora is a cross between Semillon and Gewurztraminer, created at UC Davis, and released in 1958. Our other ";flower"; is Orange Muscat, known in the Veneto region of Italy as Moscato Fior di ;Arancio (Flower of the Orange). Floral aromas and suggestions of citrus combine with the fuller body of Semillon itself and some Chenin Blanc to produce a winning blend.

2018 Tre 'T'

Our most substantial red, Tre 'T' is made from three robust varieties that originate from separate countries: Teroldego is a chewy, slightly rustic wine from Trentino in the north of Italy, Tempranillo is the basis for the famous Spanish Rioja wines, and Tannat is a somewhat obscure variety from SW France that makes a very big and potentially tannic wine. Grapes for Tre 'T' come primarily from the Clarksburg appellation.

2021 Selvatico

This is the wine that perhaps illustrates our winemaking philosophy the best: blended wines that are totally non-traditional and make the best use of the material on-hand in our vineyard. A wine that even a blindfolded Italian would identify as of his country. We use Peverella, a rare north Italian specialty with a spicy finish, Tocai Friulano from the northeast, and Forastera from the deep South. Beginning in this vintage there is also a small amount of the deep South variety FIANO.
