As with several of our wines, the proprietary name does in fact describe what is in the bottle: Ampio means ample or generous in Italian. Using two grapes which are both dark in color and complex in flavor, the blend satisfies the palate's need for a "big" wine without overemphasis on either fruit or alcohol; it has a unique roundness to it that is captivating in a heavier style of red. For Ampio, we use the French red grape Mondeuse indigenous to the Savoie region on the border with Swizerland and Carmine, a two-generation cross of ( ( Carignan X Cabernet Sauvignon) X Merlot ) developed by the famous breeder Dr. H.P. Olmo at the University of California.
