The sophisticated world of wine is finally discovering gruner veltliner, the groovy white grape of Austria. Gruner is great at expressing terroir and full of character on its own, as well as an amiable companion on the dinner table. A bit of buttered waffles topped with fresh whipped cream greets the nose. Tangerine and white pepper with hints of gooseberry and toasted almond play on the palate. The finish is clean and full of hints of apricot. This grape is somewhat similar to chardonnay in that it can be made in fresh and easy drinking style, but the best examples are complex, powerful, and ageworthy.
