Each drupelet contains one seed, and an average raspberry has 100 to 120 seeds. The wild rose grows as a shrub and its hips have been eaten since ancient times by both humans and animals. In mediaeval Europe, they were grown within monasteries for medicinal purposes. Hibiscus buds and flowers are edible, with a lemony taste, and are rich in vitamin C. They can be used in chutneys, soups, salads, curries, jams and jellies. Dried, they are also used in herbal tea.
