II Falco translates from the Italian as The Falcon, a play on Monte Falco ( Falco Mountain) where Sagrantino hails. It sis one of the rarest grapes in the world with less than one thousand acres planted worldwide. Our Sagrantino-based blend is deeply-structured with volume, tannin, acidity and waves of flavor that build on the palate over the course of drinking a glass. This earthy varietal is blended with Montepulciano an Petit Verdot to bring juicy fruit character to this complex and full-bodied wine. Specifically, in Umbria, the ancient hillside town of Montefalco is the center for Sagrantino plantings with almost half of the grapes planted there. Sagrantino is an extraordinarily-tannic red grape capable of making wines of immense power and structure easily aging for decades. This dry red wine is not for the faint of heart! Sagrantino loves hot weather and has made itself quite at home in our vineyard, as the wine display immense power and structure. Sagrantino responds well to our Appassimento drying technique, displaying concentrated flavors of dried plums, dried cherries, currant and savory characteristics reminiscent of pope tobacco. Sagrantino is the Umbrian's companion some of Italy's most cherished cuisines, black truffles and wild boar. It's a super tannin bomb, and those of you with patience will be rewarded with an incredible flavor evolution as the wine will soften up and new flavors will emerge with a few years in the cellar.
