Sangiovese
CA - San Joaquin - Lodi - Clements Hills
Of the Italian grapes, Sangiovese has always been a favorite. I'm particularly interested in Italian varietals in California becuase they tend to thrive in hot enviroments without dropping in pH, something that cool climate grapes struggle with at times. This year's vintage is from a different block in the vineyard than the previous, where ripening was less intense and the tannins lower. The resulting wine is a light ruby color, with delicate aromas of violet and cherry, and a soft, elegant finish.
Lewis Vineyard is in the Clements Hills, which are situated on the edge of the Central Valley flood plane as it transitions into the foothills. The lower part of the vineyard borders the Mokelumne River and is composed of sandy clay loam, and the higher sections have more decomposed granite mixed in. This year's Sangiovese came from rows running the length of the property and encompassing these varied soils.
