Legend has it that Clone 30 Cabernet Sauvignon was originally planted near the Silverado Trail in the Stag’s Leap District of Napa Valley at the See Ranch owned by Harry See of See’s Candies. Such a fitting story to set the stage of this fantastic new vintage, for the 2016 JHC Cabernet Sauvignon is rich in both history and explosive flavor. It bursts out of the bottle like a dark crimson red tidal wave crashing into the glass hurling aromas of dried sandalwood and freshly cut Gran Habano cigars. An undertow of ripe red plums and black currants is uplifted by a kirsch-like cherry and bitter-almond jolt. The mouthfeel is ever-so-changing and feels like layers of a neapolitan cake with drizzles of Luxardo Maraschino Liqueur over the top. Yea, don’t be afraid to indulge in this one. The wine concludes, funnily enough, with a See’s Candies Dark Chocolate square with crushed espresso bean quality that aids in its firm tannic structure and crisp and dry finish. It feels like a firm and confident handshake after landing a big deal. It was a pleasure doing business with you, Mr. Cranor.
