After taking a year off from chardonnay production, we found a beautiful block of 30 plus year old chardonnay vines on extremely shallow shale rich soils. 2016 was a very special vintage. The winter damage did some severe crop reduction in certain sites, and this site was perfectly reduced, more or less evenly across the entire vineyard, yielding just about 1 ton to the acre of beautifully ripe, but balanced, elegant fruit. With such low yields, it was only natural that this wine put on weight quite quickly, and the 2016 is probably the ripest most opulent vintage of chard we have produced to date, but, elevage in both stainless and 500 liter neutral puncheons, as well as full Malo, give us a wine with more than just ripe fruit. This is a beauty.
