This holiday season we are excited to open the library and share this limited release collection of three premier reds. Each set includes a handcrafted three-bottle wooden wine box with the Cana Vineyards logo. 2019 Unité Reserve:Winner of the 2022 Virginia Governor's Cup 2019 Le Mariage: Placed in the 2022 Governor's Case, among the top 12 wines Cornus Virginicus Edition II: Crafted each year by the winning winemaker of the Governor's Cup Unité Reserve represents the best lots from our Estate vineyard, anchored each year by Petit Verdot, which truly shines in the spectacular 2019 vintage. On the nose, savory notes of black olive, soy sauce, and toasted oak are followed by vanilla, black plum, and herbes de Provence. Ripe blackberry accompanies the black plum and herbes de Provence on the palate and is supported by well-structured tannins. This wine will pair with dishes that complement the herbal and savory notes. The tannins will also provide a nice match for richer dishes. It would a lovely pairing for an herb crusted leg of lamb or beef wellington. 65% Petit Verdot, 29% Cabernet Franc, 6% Merlot. Le Mariage is a signature Meritage-style blend. The nose is complex and inviting leading with aromas of black cherry, blueberry, and plum, closely followed by notes of cocoa powder, vanilla, and a hint of tarragon. On the palate, the same fruit profile is accompanied by cocoa and nutmeg and wrapped in silky, supple tannins. The 2019 vintage, which placed in the 2022 Governor's Case, is a blend of 43% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 14% Malbec, 14% Petit Verdot, and 7% Cabernet Franc. Cornus Virginicus is a collaboration with the First Lady of Virginia, crafted each year by the winery which wins the Governor's Cup. Our winemaker Melanie Natoli created Edition II, a blend of 67% Petit Verdot and 33% Merlot. Darker fruit flavors of blueberry, black cherry, and blackberry are supported by notes of cola, tarragon, and gentle spice. Aging 17 months in French oak provides a full mouthfeel with plush tannins and a lengthy finish. Each vintage is produced with passion and care to tell the story of Virginia wine, particularly here in beautiful Loudoun County. Our winemaker is on a mission to share the magic of rosé with everyone. The grapes for these bottles were grown, picked, processed, and vinified to showcase the beauty of an intentional rosé. This rosé is bold and plush with ripe strawberries and watermelon in the nose, with juicy red berry and cherry notes on the palate. Cornus Virginicus is a limited-release wine that celebrates Virginia agriculture. The project is a collaboration between the First Lady of Virginia, Suzanne S. Youngkin, and a rotating Virginia winemaker. As winners of the 2022 Virginia Governor's Cup, Cana Vineyards and winemaker Melanie Natoli crafted the second edition of this signature blend, released September 27, 2023. Cornus Virginicus is Latin for “Flowering tree of Virginia” and pays tribute to the Commonwealth’s official state flower and tree— the Dogwood— and the First Lady of Virginia’s seal. Depicted on the front label, the Dogwood tree is symbolic of tradition, strength and beauty found throughout Virginia. The fruit is closely followed by notes of cocoa powder, vanilla, and a hint of tarragon. On the palate, the same fruit profile is accompanied by cocoa and nutmeg and wrapped in silky, supple tannins. This wine will pair beautifully with leaner meats such as duck, venison, or quail dressed in a blueberry sauce. All lots were individually hand harvested, chilled overnight, destemmed, and fermented in small volume open top fermenters. All lots received twice daily punchdowns and were pressed at dryness. The wines were put to barrel to complete secondary fermentation. After completion of secondary fermentation, the wines were racked to tank, sulfured, and returned to barrel to complete aging.
