Chambourcin is a hybrid grape developed for the Midwest but, with our changing climate, it no longer grows very well in Iowa. Brick Arch Winery has sourced grapes from Chalk Ridge Vineyard in Fort Madison for many years, but this wine represents the last harvest of Chambourcin from this vineyard before the vines finally gave up the struggle. It is richly fruity, with raspberry and cherry notes typical of Chambourcin, dry with moderate tannins and a long pleasant finish.
One of our favorite French hybrid grapes, Chambourcin is able to handle challenging Midwestern climate changes yet delivers the depth of color and flavor one expects from Vinifera grapes. Chambourcin has a gentle smoky character that varies in intensity from one vintage to the next.
Pairs well with rich beef stew, steak or tomato based dishes.
West Branch, Iowa, is the birthplace of President Herbert Hoover, who was known as "The Uncommon Man". Uncommon Red is a blend of Midwestern-grown Cabernet franc and California Malbec. It is lighter in body with flavors of raspberry and cherry. Completely dry, it pairs wells with turkey and pork dishes.
Sunset Bridge is a moderately sweet fortified wine (similar to ruby port) made from Chambourcin grapes from Iowa and Illinois. The rich dark fruit flavors pair well with dark chocolate or bacon and blue cheese.
Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes are sourced from California (because they won't grow in the Midwest!). The wine is produced and barrel-aged here in Iowa. It is rich and full-bodied with generous tannins. The perfect match for steak dinner with the boss.
Made from Michigan cherries, Uber Cherry is intensely flavored balanced with just enough sweetness, with a serious kick (17% alcohol).
This port-style wine is perfect with dark chocolate or New York cheesecake.
Michel is a pleasantly sweet sherry-style wine perfect as an aperitif before dinner or as a lovely finishing touch. Michael has been aging quietly in oak barrels for just over 6 years. Final residual sugar content is about 5.5%.
Compare with Ellison, our dry sherry.
