The Tale of ALMA-ALTA
Our travels shape our lives and our stories. The tale of Alma-Alta begins in a town in the Republic Kazakhstan….
During John Higg’s career with Philip Morris, he and Shelby spent years in Europe and Asia. John worked in Kazakhstan for 3 years. It was there John learned that Kazakhstan was the birthplace of the apple. The name Alma-Alta means “father of apples” in Kazakh.
Today, the Higgs family continues the legacy begun by the family patriarch, James Higgs. Join with them as they celebrate 3 generations of farming in the Shenandoah Valley by introducing their new apple wine, Alma-Alta.
This horse of a wine is waiting for the gate to open, with years of cellaring yet to express its full potential. The bright fruits and lively acidity pair this wine perfectly with beef stew, roast loin, and lamb. Great to drink now or lay down for several more years. If you plan to drink in one day, decant a few hours before serving.
100% Chambourcin. Deep purple in color, this ruby-style Port presents earthy notes and sweet black fruits. Infused with Virginia-distilled brandy, the Port is full of dark cherry and a spicy, long finish that makes this a perfect digestif to share with friends after a great meal. This port will keep up to a week or longer after opening than a typical red wine.
A light fore palate and a lively finish follow faint aromas of grated lime zest over crushed stone. Refreshing now, this wine will cellar gracefully.

Situated on a sandy, north-facing slope that overlooks the North River, our Estate Chardonnay shows light aromas of fruit, flowers, and yeast with an underlying minerality. Notes of dried currant, cassis and berry on the nose. Berry flavors on the palate, tinged with dried fruit, caramel and burnt sugar as well as a good dose of toasty oak on the finish. Well integrated tannins add a depth and good acid lends a brightness to the finish on the palate.
One of our most popular wines, Red Barren features a rich blend of Chambourcin, Petit Verdot, Merlot and Touriga. Dark cherries and dried fruit on the nose and wonderfully soft on the palate, this wine works well as an aperitif, with the main course, and with dessert. We love Red Barren chilled!
The bold and the beautiful, Petit Verdot is a rock star grape here in the Shenandoah Valley. 100% estate grown, this wine is fruit forward and full of acidity. Aged in 60% new French and American oak and cellared for 18 months, this wine will age gracefully in years to come, mellowing out its initial intensity and giving way to a bouquet of dark fruits, herbs, and spices.
