Vignoles is from our earliest planting of our vineyard, with vines 23 and 24 years old. The wine from this vineyard changes from year to year as the growing conditions affect the flavors. And what we do with the wine changes too. For instance, I have some very dry 2020 sitting in oak barrels as I type this entry about our 2021, which was bottled on 4/13/2022.
As the wine fermented, we made the decision to keep the wine sweet. First, we needed it for Catherine's Blend, first and foremost. The flavors were outstanding and there was zero rot in the vineyard (somewhat of a bummer!), which is novel for us, that doesn't happen very often.
The fruit is incredible, the sweetness is balanced because we never add sugar or back-sweeten our wines. Lots of tropical fruit flavors mixed with some saucy apple flavors. Finish? Long and smooth. Sweetness? Clean, refreshing, not cloying. You taste the fruit, taste the sweetness but don't get stuck with a sugary aftertaste at the end. Classic Vignoles!!
